Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for Croydon Removals
Croydon Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our operations. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with household and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and storage activities across our service area.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our work. We will achieve this by identifying and controlling hazards, complying with relevant health and safety legislation and continually improving our safety performance.
We recognise that effective health and safety management is an integral part of providing a professional removals service. All work must be planned and carried out with safety as a primary consideration, from initial survey and quotation through to final delivery and placement of goods.
Management Responsibilities
The management of Croydon Removals has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and for ensuring that adequate resources are made available to maintain safe systems of work. This includes providing suitable vehicles, equipment and protective clothing and ensuring that staff receive relevant information, instruction, training and supervision.
Managers and supervisors must lead by example, promote a positive safety culture and ensure that health and safety is considered in all operational decisions. They are responsible for carrying out risk assessments, communicating safe working procedures and investigating any incidents, accidents or near misses to prevent recurrence.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All staff must follow company safety procedures, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment and report hazards or unsafe practices without delay.
Employees must cooperate with management to enable Croydon Removals to meet its legal and moral obligations. This includes attending training sessions, toolbox talks and safety briefings, and immediately informing supervisors of any injuries, near misses, faulty equipment or changes in site conditions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our core removal activities, including manual handling, driving and vehicle operations, working in and around customer premises, use of lifting equipment and storage facility operations. These assessments are reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in work practices or conditions.
Safe working procedures are developed from these assessments and are communicated to staff. Examples include safe lifting techniques, loading and securing of goods, use of ramps and trolleys, stair work, doorway navigation, use of lifting straps and the handling of fragile or high-value items.
Manual Handling and Musculoskeletal Protection
Manual handling is a key risk in the removals industry. To reduce the likelihood of strain and injury, Croydon Removals provides training in correct lifting and carrying techniques, team lifting and the use of mechanical aids. We plan work so that heavy or awkward items are identified in advance and handled using appropriate equipment or additional personnel.
Staff are encouraged to recognise their physical limits and to request assistance when needed. Unsafe short cuts, such as single-person lifts of excessively heavy items, are not permitted. Regular reviews of manual handling practices are carried out to ensure ongoing improvement.
Vehicles, Driving and Road Safety
All vehicles used by Croydon Removals are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition in accordance with manufacturer guidance and legal requirements. Drivers must hold the appropriate licence, follow road traffic laws and adhere to company policies on safe driving, journey planning and driver fatigue.
Loads must be distributed evenly and securely fastened to prevent movement during transport. Drivers are responsible for checking that vehicles are not overloaded and that access to emergency exits, fire extinguishers and safety equipment is maintained.
Customer Premises and Site Safety
Our teams work in a wide variety of locations, including homes, offices, industrial units and storage sites. Before work begins, access routes, staircases, lifts, doorways and outside areas are assessed for potential hazards. Protective coverings and floor protection may be used where appropriate to reduce slip and trip risks and prevent damage.
We coordinate with customers and other site users to ensure a safe working environment. This includes agreeing suitable loading and parking areas, identifying any site-specific rules and ensuring that children, pets and members of the public are kept away from hazardous areas during loading and unloading.
Equipment, Maintenance and Personal Protective Equipment
We provide suitable equipment for removal activities, such as sack trucks, dollies, ramps, straps, blankets and lifting aids. All equipment is inspected regularly, maintained in good condition and withdrawn from service if found to be defective.
Where necessary, personal protective equipment such as safety footwear, gloves or high-visibility clothing is provided and must be worn as instructed. Employees must take reasonable care of any equipment issued to them and report any defects immediately.
Training, Information and Supervision
Croydon Removals ensures that all employees receive appropriate health and safety training for their roles. This includes induction training for new starters, task-specific training for removal and driving duties and periodic refresher training.
Supervisors monitor working practices on site to confirm that safety procedures are understood and followed. Additional guidance is provided when new equipment or working methods are introduced.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries and near misses must be reported promptly so that appropriate medical assistance can be arranged and the event can be recorded and investigated. We use this information to identify trends, implement corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures are in place for incidents such as fire, road traffic collisions, spills or sudden illness. Staff are briefed on these procedures and must follow the instructions of the responsible person on site or attending emergency services.
Consultation, Review and Continuous Improvement
We consult with employees on health and safety matters, encouraging suggestions and feedback on how our working practices can be improved. Regular reviews of this policy and associated procedures are carried out to ensure they remain effective and reflect current operations and legislation.
This Health and Safety policy applies to all activities undertaken by Croydon Removals and is supported by more detailed procedures and guidance notes. It is communicated to all employees and made available to customers and other interested parties on request.
